The winners to our second photo contest at SIS Bayside were announced last week. For this contest, the topic was 'portraiture' and students were challenged to take photographs of faces.

Service learning is an integral part of every school and often overlooked when it comes to our younger students. Students in Grade 1 have recently been introduced to the notion of service learning.

G1 student Emma Ye played the lead character of Horton in 'Seussical The Musical' that was performed at The Grand Theater in Nanshan to raise funds for a charity campaign.

Project Gambia sent our Grade 5 teacher/FLL coach Kathy Diaz a thank you letter for her fund raising effort. The $3000 donation has made it possible to build toilets and handwashing sinks in a new Preschool in The Gambia.

Our First Lego League (FLL) teams just competed in the last tournament of the year in Shanghai where both teams shined and deserve congratulations. The Hydro-Bots placed 2nd in the research project category and were the only team from Shenzhen to win an award.

This year once again, PSA has been very proud to sponsor the Discover China Day T-Shirt design contest. Students in all grade levels were invited to create an original design using the school colors of red, white, black and gray around this year's theme, Year of the Dog.

Grade 5 teacher, Kathy Diaz and her co-First Lego League co-coach and husband, Rudy Diaz, made a $3,000 contribution to a school in The Gambia in the names of the teams they coach. The generous $3,000 contribution made it possible for a school in The Gambia to open.

Last Tuesday at the parent learning workshop, we discussed the social and emotional learning of primary students at SIS. Throughout the school year, students learn about personal safety, bullying prevention, and transitions.

Last semester, our 10STEAM class went on a challenging journey of creation. Inspired by the current popularity of 'Escape Rooms', our students explored the principles of science, technology, engineering, art and math to design escape rooms.

5th graders did some "caroling" around Jingshan campus. They walked around and popped into classes to play a classic Christmas song on the tone chimes.

Our teachers Clayton Dowty and Faye Krouse have been appointed as IB Examiners. This takes the total of IB examiners at SIS to 9.

At SIS we engage children through inquiry based learning. The SIS First Lego League Team uses inquiry based learning to teach young students many skills across disciplines. Watch the video of our students explaining their projects and think about all the skills that these Grade 5 students learned and used to create their project.

For the past 2 weeks we have been focusing on celebrating our multicultural school. Students have had great fun exploring and showcasing their nationality, especially at the International Parade.
