Our Grade 2 French Heritage Program Students are learning all about our world famous traveler Marco Polo. Back then, in the 1200s, most people spent their whole lives where they were born. But not Marco. He made an eleven-thousand-mile trip to China and back.
On the way to China Marco wrote about all the strange and new things he saw in his journal. He wrote about the many goods and spices merchants traded along the Silk route. He wrote about the different customs people had and the way people lived. Or the day that he saw a crocodile for the very first time (Small Moment alert!). He even met the fierce Mongol warrior, Kublai Khan in his palace in China. We’re sure learning all kinds of new vocabulary and interesting facts along the way.
The students are also learning about living in Europe at the time of Marco Polo- most people didn’t know how to read and write. Children had to work instead of going to school. Or you stunk because you didn’t take a bath very often. Our learners were most amazed about the toilets or special pots, which were emptied on the streets once they were full. We can’t imagine all these things anymore!
Luckily we are in the position that we cán read and write (and don’t forget: flush), even if it’s just a little that we can read, or not as fast as we would like to write. We are getting there. Step by step. Just like Marco: by crossing borders and exploring new grounds. #sisrocks #FrenchELL #challengeyourself #reading #writing
