Students in grade three have been learning about inventors and inventions over the past few weeks. Along with studying causes and effects of various inventions on society, as well as characteristics of inventors, students have been working on design challenges.
First, we asked students to create a table using only newspaper, tape, and cardboard. The table had to meet a number of requirements such as height and the ability to hold a heavy book. Students worked in collaborative groups, using effective communication to achieve a common goal.
Next, we tasked students with creating a desk organizer. Students first identified problem areas in and around their desk, then drew and constructed designs that they believed would solve the problem.
Finally, students put their creativity and design process skills to the test by working in groups to create an original invention. The focus throughout this unit has been on the process, rather than the product, with emphasis on the fact that designing an invention is iterative. Students have been using Educreations and iMovie throughout the project to reflect on successes and failures.
Grade three will showcase their inventions, as well as the design process, during our Invention Convention on Thursday, January 16th.
