Writing in ECLC
Posted 01/08/2014 08:47AM

We believe that the children are ready in terms of writing.

According to Albert Einstein, imagination is better than knowledge. The same goes on how we perceive children's knowledge in the process of writing from ages three to four years old. Since, they don't have the convention yet of writing, spelling, punctuation and other helpful tools, early writing in ECLC caters to a unique and adventurous experience. The first step in cultivating writers in ECLC is to let them know that they are authors in their own right even at their very young age. It is important that we cultivate in them the love for books through constantly reading story books and mentioning the name of the authors and illustrators to make them aware that they are real people who write stories just like them.

Then, in order to teach them the concept of continuity in writing, we introduce to them a blank book consisting of 4-8 pages where they will start jotting down their concepts and stories. We talk about these stories during Circle time to motivate those who are not yet interested in writing. We read their stories as eagerly as we read those story books of renowned authors. Also, we put their books alongside the storybooks we love in class to communicate with them that they are real authors.

We also do not force the child to write, but we invite them to be involved in writing from their own accord. Writing in ECLC is not just about letters, spelling and other conventions but rather communicating ideas, concepts and stories through pictures and art. Since they are not hindered by trying to make the spellings and punctuations right, they have more space for imagination and creativity.

Yes, they are only 3-year olds. But, they are all authors in their own right. Because great writers are made in a very young age.
