On December 16, 2013, Students of SIS HS CLD class performed plays for their parents, who were invited to share the students’ learning from the Chinese classroom. After the show, the parents viewed their children’s PPT presentations about the women’s status throughout Chinese history, created by the students and based on inquiry learning. Students also showed their parents their creation of drama writing.
For the 1st semester, students of HS CLD class learned Lei Yu, a famous drama written by Cao Yu. Students analyzed the plots, conflicts and characterization, and created posters to demonstrate their learning about the literary work. Students worked in groups to help each other understand the content of the drama by acting roles of the play. Students had great fun during the process of the dramatization. They demonstrated great creativity by writing their own lines for each character based on the original work, finding dresses and doing makeup for their show.
Students did researches on women’s status throughout Chinese history, which was also one of the themes of the literary work, and created their PPT presentation to demonstrate their learning on this topic, their Chinese language proficiencies and their analytical skills.
After learning about how to write a drama, students created their own drama writing, demonstrating their Chinese language abilities.
Parents gave very positive feedback on this sharing of learning. “ It helps me better understand my child’s learning in Chinese class. I am proud of his progress and accomplishment during the 1st semester”, said one of the parents. “I like this way of communication with my child and the teacher. I hope I will have more such sharing opportunities in the future,” said another parent.
The students felt proud of their learning in the Chinese classroom during the 1st semester.
