Grade One Celebrations
Posted 12/17/2013 11:59AM
In grade social studies the students learn about holidays and celebrations from around the world! The grade one students have now celebrated the fall holidays of Chinese New Moon Festival, South Korean Chuseok, and North American Thanksgiving. They have also celebrated the winter holidays of Hanukkah, German Christmas, North American Christmas, and New Years. The grade one classrooms shared a Polar Express celebration for our winter holiday. The celebration was based on the book, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg.
The students wore their pajamas to ride the train to the North Pole just as the kids in The Polar Express do! To “board the train” for the celebration, the students had to have their train tickets punched by the conductor. Once the students had boarded the train, Mr. Overlie read The Polar Express and then the students watched the movie. During the movie, the students were served hot chocolate as refreshments just as in the story. As they returned to their classrooms they each found a bell waiting for them, symbolizing belief in the magic of Christmas.
After the winter break, the grade one students look forward to celebrating Korean New Year and Chinese New Year.
We have been able to make student learning about all of these celebrations possible because of the wonderful parent volunteers who have donated their time and expertise!
