Intercultural dimension along movies

The IB French B Higher Level class is based on high level conversations, involving comprehension skills that students have to develop through their year one and year two. Students take advantage of those abilities in oral and written assessments while they are expected to demonstrate some intercultural knowledge.  

To develop this intercultural knowledge in the target language, IB French B HL students are immersed in authentic materials such as texts, newspapers articles, as well as French movies and documentaries.

The advantages of movies are multiple in our class. They lead analysis of French behaviors and stereotypes, involve students in exchanges of opinions while they develop some realistic aspects of international global issues. For reaching the objectives of the IB foreign language course, movies provide intercultural understanding skills and awareness as well as linguistic inputs.

From Cedric's perspective :
"Utilizing movies to learn, or just to better understand a foreign language is a very effective method. Not only does the student learn words and expressions the way they would be used in a realistic situation, but also the student is more engaged in the class as it isn’t forced on him but rather entertaining.
Watching “La Haine” and “Les Intouchables” in class not only demonstrated several expressions I wouldn’t have learned otherwise but also seeing these movies (which I wouldn’t have done in my free time) gave me something to talk about with my French friends and therefore put me more in touch with the French culture."
