Thanks for Thanksgiving!
Posted 12/04/2013 08:41AM

My favorite unit of study in the grade one curriculum is definitely our Celebrations unit in social studies!  What better unit for an international school than one that allows us to experience celebrations and traditions from our classmates’ home countries!

We kicked off our celebration unit earlier in the fall when we celebrated Moon Festival.  Of course we dressed up in costumes for Halloween at the end of October.  And now the time has come for Thanksgiving!

We began by reading books and watching short videos about this American holiday and its traditions and customs.  We brainstormed all the people we’re thankful for in our lives, including our moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, brothers and sisters, and teachers, principals, crossing guards, and other members of our school community.  We decided we wanted to say thank you to the people in our school community who help us every day, so we made small gifts and delivered them on Thanksgiving morning.  We learned some of the symbols of Thanksgiving, such as the cornucopia and the turkey.  We even made turkeys out of paper bags!

And then the best part of all - our Thanksgiving feast!  We invited our families to join us on Thursday morning for a potluck picnic.  We all brought our favorite dishes to share, such as dumplings, noodles, sushi, crepes, pasta, and even a turkey!  Because the weather was a little rainy and cold, we moved our picnic indoors and spread our picnic blankets on the floor.  But that didn’t stop us from having a wonderful time with the friends and family we love!

Next up on the celebrations timeline: Chuseok, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.  Please join us for our winter music concert on December 10th at 6:30 where we will sing songs from all our celebrations to show off all we’ve learned!
