Strong mental and physical health are important when living and working abroad
Posted 12/04/2013 10:06AM
As families and staff of an international community, life can be busy and exhausting. It is important to make sure you are taking care of yourself both mentally and physically when you have a full plate of obligations and responsibilities. Winter break and the holidays from December to February can be an emotional time, as it has been 4-6 months since the SIS school year started and possibly at least that long since many people have seen their family and friend groups from their home countries.

With so much energy focused on our work and lives here in Shekou, it’s important to remind oneself to de-stress, as well as appreciate the things around us. Here are some tips:

-Get to know school staff (i.e., secretaries, TAs, maintenance, financial specialists), as they can be crucial allies when basic living struggles occur.
-Take time to make your apartment/house your home and refuge. Bringing familiar things (i.e., music, photos, books, games, products, comfort foods).
-Be careful in not being overzealous in volunteering for more committees and duties than you are comfortable with.
-You may feel like you are living a double-(or multiple!) life, with friends and family in your home country as well as current community. Remind yourself that all relationships add value to your life, and that regular connectivity/communication with people all over the world is valuable.
-You have to make time to do things you enjoy outside of work. This can mean exercising, reading, watching movies, traveling- anything that works for YOU!
-Finally, remind yourself that flexibility and a sense of humor are essential to survival abroad.
