HS Students Attend THIMUN Singapore
Posted 11/29/2017 02:58PM

Last week a group of 21 high school students from SIS flew to Singapore to attend The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Singapore, hosted at Hwa Chong Institution. The four-day conference draws more than 1,500 students from major schools all over Asia and the Middle East. THIMUN is the predominant Model UN system in international schools. In contrast to the competitive US-style, THIMUN focuses on cooperation and building consensus among delegates. There are no individual awards and the highest honor a delegate can receive is to be a "main-submitter" (the principal author and defender of a resolution) and have their resolution passed by the assembly. Student delegates can achieve this by negotiating and compromising with their fellow delegates to build support for their ideas.

SIS was well-represented this year. Out of our 15 delegates, four were able to "main submit" their resolutions, and three were passed. Three more of our students served as judges in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) simulation, which settles disputes of international law between countries.

Most impressively, out of students across the region, three of our students were selected to serve as Student Officers of the conference. They were selected months ago through a rigorous application process, and have been researching and preparing for the conference ever since. Seniors Min Ji Kim and Virginia Li served as Chairs of the General Assembly, and Senior Michelle Lee was the President of the ICJ, a particularly high honor. All three student officers performed admirably and delivered 3 of the 12 major speeches in front of more than 1,500 at the closing ceremonies.

Next up for the SIS MUN program is the Beijing Model UN held at the International School of Beijing in March 2018. Keep an eye here for updates!
