Grade 2's summative assessment task for our unit, How We Organize Ourselves, was to use their knowledge of materials to create and invent a product that satisfied a need or want at SIS. Teachers from all over the school provided our students with problems that they had in their classrooms, and our students were asked to try and design and build a solution for that problem. Problems ranged from umbrellas that were always falling over, to building water bottle holders, to redirecting the flow from air conditioner units!
The students did an amazing job following the design process to create new inventions. They thoughtfully planned out what materials they would need, how the design might look, and took measurements to make sure their invention would be the right size. Once they started making and testing their new products, students had to stop and find a way to fix problems as they arose, and improve their design to make it better. Once the students were happy with what they made, they presented their inventions to the teachers who requested them to see if the design would really work and to receive feedback. The students were so excited to hear all of the positive comments from the teachers and their students, and to see their inventions working successfully!
Thank you so much to all of the teachers who participated in challenging our students! They had a great time, and can't wait to keep inventing!
