In Kindergarten, the KB Rockets have been exploring the idea that living things can change their environment. To unpack this idea, the KB Rockets discovered what it means to be a living thing and what living things need. To start, a lot of KB Rockets thought that living things had to have feet, but the introduction of earthworms in our classroom quickly helped them realize that not all living things have feet, but that all living things grow, reproduce, get energy, usually by eating, and react to change. KB has been learning a lot of vocabulary that is helping them to care for and to understand earthworms and the relationship they have with the environment. In conversations and even in writing the KB Rockets have been using words like decompose, landfills, compost, and recycle. As they continue their unit, the KB Rockets will ask "what will happen if..." questions to help them decide where to put their food, plastic, and paper waste.
