Cooking ASAs - Promoting Healthy Food Choices for Preschoolers
Posted 10/17/2017 08:40AM

As preschool teachers, we are responsible to deliver positive messages to children about healthy food choices. By getting children involved in the process of making snacks, they have great opportunities to learn new concepts and practice multiple skills needed to complete the activities.

Are you running out of healthy snack ideas? Don't worry, here are some examples you can try with your children at home!

Decorate Waffle - Stir egg, milk, flour, and baking soda and put the mixture into a waffle machine. Prepare some fruit/vegetable choices for children to decorate their waffles. Children learn math concepts such as volume, more or less, and different sizes of the measuring cups by making the waffle mixture.

Rainbow Fruit Cup - Prepare fruits/vegetables that are the colors of rainbow. Have a clear plastic cup and have children fill the cup with different kinds of food. We can finish with cream topping and sprinkles/cookie sticks. During this activity, children are encouraged to use all the food to make their rainbow cups. They may be willing to try the food they don't like before, and they get to learn and be more familiar with the colors of rainbow.

Garlic Bread - Mix crushed garlic and melted unsalted butter in a bowl and spread it on the bread. Place the bread in the oven until golden brown. Children can use cookie cutters to cut the bread into their favourite shapes. This activity provides opportunities for children to learn about math concepts like shape recognition and practice fine and gross motors skills when mixing, spreading, and using the cutters.

Banana Milkshake - Just add banana and milk into the blender, including ice cream or ice cubes for thicker texture (optional). We can also use other fruits like strawberries, mixture of various berries, papaya, dragonfruit, to substitute for banana. Children get to see the process of how to turn many items into one item and it makes them wonder what happens during the process.
