As always, things have been extremely exciting at Shekou International School's primary campus. We had thirteen fourth and fifth grade students step up to the courageous task of campaigning for student council (STUCO). Each year, five members of the student body are elected by their peers to serve as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Historian, and Communications Officer. To run for office, students have to exemplify the school ESLRs (Expected Student Learning Results), receive signatures from students, family, and teachers prior to campaigning, & prepare a presentation to their fellow students. Tasks completed by these brave individuals include: writing a speech explaining reasons they should be chosen, creating a poster to hang in the school for their peers to observe, and (optionally, though the majority of candidates decided to participate) preparing a video they presented in front of all students from grade 2 to grade 5.
Students that participated throughout this process learned numerous skills consisting of, but not limited to, time-management, social, research, communication, and self-management (the IB PYP approaches to learning). This school year, the race was certainly tight with only a few votes separating those that were elected onto the executive board; thus, verifying how outstanding all these candidates truly were.
It is splendid to see such committed global citizens interested in bettering the school, the community, and beyond. Students discussed in their campaigns, their speeches / videos, and during our first after-school meeting how they hope to influence STUCO and Shekou International School. Students have expressed interest in creating more social gatherings for students, connecting our ECC program throughout the school day and school year in activities happening on primary school's campus, serving as role-models for peers, and participating in service-oriented events to increase engagement and activist endeavors throughout Shenzhen.
Five students were elected on Friday, September 15th. At the first STUCO executive board meeting, positions were chosen by these students. May we introduce these amazing role-models at SIS: Rachel from 5A (President), Tracey from 4B (Vice-President), Daniel from 5B (Secretary), Jason from 5C (Historian), and Geeta from 4B (Communications Officer). We all are looking forward to excellence from this bunch as well as an outstanding school year!
