Makerspace Inspires G3 Students to Create
Posted 09/19/2017 02:59PM

Third graders in Mrs. Kuemmerlin's class are makers. Since the beginning of the school year, the class has collected used and recycled materials from home to stock their makerspace. A makerspace is a safe learning space in the classroom that gives students the opportunity to create, tinker, invent, explore, develop skills, design/redesign, construct, problem solve, leverage technology, and collaborate all around a common goal. A makerspace supports the SIS mission of, "inspires our students to become principled, innovate contributors to a transforming world." The makerspace in Mrs. Kuemmerlin's classroom is a platform to teach empathy and collaborate. Students learn the design process and have an opportunity to be creative while learning. The makerspace also fosters attributes such as perseverance, curiosity and resourcefulness while encouraging a growth mindset.

Students were introduced to the class makerspace with a connection to literature by reading the book, The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. The story shows the importance of having a maker mindset, a mindset that encourages perseverance, creativity, a can-do attitude, and the belief that we can do anything. Thus far students have completed two group design challenges. The students have been highly engaged and embraced the challenges with determination, focus, and excitement. One student said, "This is so fun, we are learning so much and we don't even realize it!"

The makerspace in our classroom is constantly evolving to fit the needs of the class' learning and units. Students can earn badges in specific skills which enable them to become the class expert for future projects. Mrs. Kuemmerlin's goals for the makerspace are for all learners to see themselves as makers and to use the makerspace to integrate design projects into the curriculum and for students to connect and apply the design process to their daily lives.
