Little Builders LEGO ES After School Activity program
Posted 05/25/2017 08:52AM

Since 2015 Little Builders has offered LEGO Education as an after school activity (ASA) at SIS. This program educates and captivates students from kindergarten up to grade 5 with a fun and rewarding experience for students and us!

The advantage of teaching the LEGO Education system is that students are excited by the class, even without knowing what we are going to build each lesson. LEGO Education focuses on many different areas of study, especially science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Already at the kindergarten level we talk about physics and the concept of "simple machines." We introduce levers, gears, pulleys and concepts like force and buoyancy etc. Our lessons are built around introducing these concepts in a way so students can learn by doing and at the same time using logic and reasoning with playfulness & imagination. The effectiveness of hands-on learning has been well documented for many years. Today neuroscience can document even more precisely how physical and active involvement in experiences stimulates the brain and improves the quality of learning.

In our ASA, we guide students to follow basic principles of the scientific method in a playful way. We introduce a topic and a related assignment to build. Then the students construct the build, while working in pairs or in teams. Finally, we explore the lesson concepts through reflecting upon the experience: discussing why and how things worked. After that, in the remaining time, kids get free play time in which we stimulate them to transform what they have built using their own creativity.

Watching children grow and learn is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have as a teacher. Our ASA provides complete solutions that stimulate creativity and foster problem solving and teamwork skills. Progression is the key to ensuring that students are optimally challenged to develop their knowledge and skills.

Additionally, we are developing a Lego Mindstorms curriculum. With this addition, we are soon introducing programming fundamentals via the LEGO software. Join our ASA next year and let your kids learn and play!!
