Movers and Shakers Summit in Grade 5
Posted 03/23/2017 11:22AM

The last six weeks, 5th grade students have been busy learning about movers and shakers. Movers and shakers are people who make an impact to the world around them, both in big ways and small ways. The students started off by researching and learning about a variety of people who have taken action to make the world a better place. After learning about a variety of movers and shakers, the students were tasked with finding a way for them to become a mover and shaker.

With the help of Mr. Martin Ruthaivilavan and Mr. Alex Gutirrez, the 5th graders were introduced to AMPed; Autonomous, Mastery, Purposeful Education. The AMPed framework helped the students by challenging them to first find problems around them. After the problem finding stage, they began to brainstorm solutions to the problems and plan the action steps they needed to take to accomplish their goal.

Students came up with a variety of problems, from problems that impacted them in class, such as stools with little back support, to problems that affected people in countries half way around the world. The students had four weeks to work on their projects before they shared their ideas at the 2nd annual Movers and Shakers Summit. Their projects ranged from collecting batteries for proper disposal, adding turning indicators to a bicycle and volunteering to help teach local students English by playing games and reading together. The Summit not only served as a venue to celebrate their accomplishments, but also proved to be an effective reminder of how we can all work to be more empathetic to the problems around us.
