Chinese New Year is a one of the grand and joyful festival in China. SIS is very lucky to be part of a multi-cultural community that celebrates this great festival along with the Chinese people.
As we were celebrating and enjoying this happy festival, we gave the opportunity to students to deepen their understanding of China's great diversity. This year, the Chinese Department at Bayside designed a two week program, focusing on "Chinese Kung Fu".
In recent years, Chinese Kung Fu has gained more and more popularity and still influences greatly Chinese people's lifestyle today. That's why, during these two weeks, students not only explored the Chinese New Year practices, but also familiarized themselves with the basics of this popular martial art. They learned about the history and the development of Kung Fu, different Kung Fu styles and its influence in modern society. To get an authentic experience students were given the opportunity to practice this art with Kung Fu masters who taught them about the basics of Tai Qi, Shao Lin Kung Fu, and kickboxing.
As the Chinese New Year Festival spreads over two weeks, we organized the Lantern Festival Assembly to symbolize the closure of the festivities. Performances during the assembly ranged from Kung Fu performances, to a knowledge bowl competition on multi-culturalism, a French-Chinese duet, a Chinese song and choreography and eating "Tang Yuan".
Last but not least, Bayside Chinese teachers would like to thank our PSA for serving "Tang Yuan" to our students. This tradition symbolises "reunion" and wishing everyone that "everything goes well" for the upcoming year of the Rooster!
