On Monday, 23 January we held an event in the middle school to celebrate our 6th graders and their learning. Over 50 parents spent time with their children in the middle school at Bayside Campus, sharing the achievements of their child in Humanities, Art, Mathematics and Science. This opportunity allowed 6th graders an authentic audience for their accomplishments and allowed parents to see a glimpse of some of the amazing endeavours going on at Bayside every day.
The pinnacle of this event was when all 6th Grade students received a copy of a book, which is a compilation of all of the student's personal narratives. The creation of the book was the culmination of a Humanities unit of study, Personal Narratives. During this unit, each student learned and honed their skills as a writer by planning, drafting, elaborating, revising, editing and publishing the story that was included in the book. It was just lovely to see each student enjoying their published work with their parents. Six students were brave enough to offer a short 'snapshot' reading of their story to all of the students and parents at the event. It was a great display of the talent our 6th graders are developing in speaking.
Students and parents were then invited to wander down the hallway to visit Ms. Laird's classroom where students took the opportunity to show parents their skills with a microscope and share some math games. Many pieces of art from both Art and an elective class, Art Loves Science, were on display for students to show parents.
Thank you to all of the parents who came along. We hope to host another similar event in the coming months.
