Fifth Grade Honored at Math Olympiad Tournament

Over the past weekend, 24 fifth grade and 10 sixth grade students departed for AISG at 5:50 AM. What could possibly be the draw for these students to wake up before the sun? It wasn't PSA popcorn, or a morning movie extravaganza, it was the 2nd annual Math Olympiad Tournament! This year, 5th grade was honored to have two teams place in the top five for points overall!
The Math Olympiad tournament is a team based math competition where students use their understanding of math and teamwork to solve problems. The tournament is broken into two sections. The first section entails an hour long word problem and teams are tasked to not only solve a challenging word problem, but also effectively communicate their ideas and strategies. The second part of the tournament involves 5 different math areas: number sense, geometry, probability, algebraic sense and measurement. Students were given twenty minutes to solve each area, with each part having five questions.
Every year, the students come away with a heightened sense of identity as mathematicians, which is evidenced by their collaboration and determination to persevere in solving problems. Congratulations to all participants!
