SIS had the privilege of hosting Roger Emerson and John Jacobson on November 7th. Roger and John have been in demand as choral clinicians and composers of choral music for over 30 years, with hundreds of choral music arrangements and original compositions to their credit. They also offer professional development for teachers in summer workshops and at regional and national music educator conventions.
It was incredible to see them work with our students last week on the ES musical composed by Roger and John, "Pirates! The Musical". John had the students dancing and smiling as he taught the choreography and Roger had them singing out loud. Our SIS students are so lucky to be able to say they were given a workshop on their school musical from the actual composers!
After a fantastic visit at the ES, they visited the Bayside campus and workshopped the HS choir on some of the finer points of a cappella choral singing with Roger's arrangement of "Imagine". The HS students are fortunate to have seasoned professionals give them advice on vocal techniques. The MS Choir was given a real treat when John taught them how to do "Double Dream Hands" (look it up on YouTube), and then both workshopped the MS students on choreography and vocal techniques on their songs for the upcoming MS concert.
It was an amazing day for all of our music students and music teachers, and we hope to continue bringing outstanding people to SIS to inspire our students. I will close with a message from John Jacobson - "Tell the kids how much fun we had working with them...to go for it...and I hope that all their 'double dreams' come true!".
