Syrian Refugees Dodgeball Fundraiser
Posted 05/31/2016 05:24PM

One of STUCO's goals is to provide outreach not only to the local SIS community but also to our larger global community. After some research, STUCO decided that the Syrian refugee conflict was a serious issue that deserved financial support and publicity at our school. We were also made aware of the issue by the excellent work being done by Ms. Rosana Walsh and her STUCO team at Bayside with the "Hats on Heads" initiative. This year, students and teachers knitted many hats to help Syrian children in a refugee camp in Jordan deal with a cold winter.

After a lot of brainstorming, the elementary STUCO team hit upon dodgeball as a fun game that would motivate a large number of students to participate as well as donate to a worthy cause! Donations were collected over the course of three mornings from May 16th through May 18th. Dodgeball participants were asked to make a minimum 15RMB donation. The dodgeball games took place on the following days during the recesses for grades 2 through 5. Many students participated but many more donated simply to help. We were surprised at the generosity of many students who pulled large sums out of their personal funds to help strangers on the other side of the world. Altogether, we raised close to 6,000RMB. These funds will be combined with those of the Bayside STUCO team and sent to support an organization called the Collateral Repair Project (, a grassroots organization whose goal is to help Syrian and Iraqi refugees currently living in Jordan.
