The mathematics department at Shekou International School provides a rigorous, challenging program designed to provide opportunities for students to understand and apply mathematical concepts in order to analyze and solve real-world problems. The success of our program was never more evident than during the recent Canadian Team Mathematics contest held at The International School of Macau.
On May 14, 2016, twenty "Mathletes" from grades 7-12 at SIS set sail to Macau to compete against some of the top math students from our region. The teams from SIS battled it out all day leading to a nail-biting finish on the final question to break a tie. In the end, SIS emerged victorious and clinched the top spot. The 1st place trophy was ours!
The students from SIS competed in teams of six during the action packed day to solve complex, high level problems from all areas of mathematics.
"I thought the competition was great because it was different from most math competitions since we had to work in teams. We had to learn to work together to solve the problems." Joon Choi – Grade 11
The day's events included three rounds of math including: (1) an individual math test taken by each team member, (2) a team test completed by each team, and (3) a high-energy relay event where one team member's question had to be received, and correct, in order for the next team member to complete the question. The rounds were only 45 minutes in length, so the teams had to work quickly to solve as many problems as possible within the given time.
"The competition was challenging, but it really helped me to develop problem solving skills and learn to collaborate with my team. If I could, I would go back to compete again." Chanhong Jeon – Grade 9
Our students worked diligently to prepare for the tournament. They continued their studies of higher level mathematics with their teachers, collaborated to develop team strategies for success, and completed a series of practice problems after school to prepare for the competition. In the end, all of their hard-work and dedication truly paid off.
