Technological Impact Museum and Exhibit (T.I.M.E.)
Posted 04/07/2016 11:32AM

On March 24th, 8th Graders from SIS opened their very own museum, in the Level 5 space of the Parkside campus. It was called T.I.M.E. (The Technological Impact Museum and Exhibit). This was their culminating project based on the Industrial Revolution and its far-reaching impact on our modern society. The essential question the students wrestled with was: Is technology progress? Students were divided into small interests groups each with their own focus and topic. These included aspects of our daily lives—everything from transportation to entertainment, and medical technologies to agriculture. These groups were in charge of researching the technologies that emerged in these areas during the Industrial Revolution, describe the technologies we rely on today, and then to predict or describe future technologies that are being developed or envisioned. Each group created their exhibit by trying to engage the audience to reflect on the ways these technologies are affecting their lives. The vision for the creation of the physical museum in Level 5 was the result of the work of student curators, who applied for the position by submitting their ideas and a description of the skills they believed an effective curator would need. In the buildup to the exhibition, they acted as mentors and leaders for other groups, created a floor plan and design for the moldable space in Level 5, and handled logistical issues for their fellow students, all while working on their project. The construction of the museum took about three successive half-days, with many students working on the weekends and after school, to complete it. The day of the exhibition saw students, parents, and community members stream in to the space for five hours, continuously. The 8th Graders helped guide guests through the exhibits, presented information on their topics, discussed guiding questions, documented the process, and interviewed visitors, asking for feedback and reflections. Overall it was a tremendous success. Kuddos to Ceci Gomez-Galvez for her work throughout the project, as well as the phenomenal logo that was used for the event. And a big thank you to John Burns and Level 5, who allowed the students to really take over the space, utilize all of its resources and adaptability, and to truly take command of their learning experience. TIME looks to be an exciting annual event that can continue to evolve and potentially engage an even wider audience in the future.
