Last weekend 16 SIS teachers attended a mathematics institute at Level 5 as part of a 2 year program called 'Mathematics Specialists in International School' (MSIS). This program is comprised of 5 Institutes designed to expand teachers' understanding of the Common Core Standards, how students learn mathematical concepts, progressions across grade levels, and evidence of student understanding.
Each MSIS institute has focused on a different mathematical domain. Last weekend teachers explored the geometry and measurement domain from PreK to grade 8. Teachers looked at how to develop students thinking, reasoning and communication skills to deepen their mathematical knowledge and practices. They also explored ways to build conceptual understanding of the core mathematical ideas contained in this domain. Conceptual understanding is knowing more than isolated facts and methods. It is understanding the mathematical concept, being able to transfer the knowledge into new situations and contexts, and explaining it clearly to others. Lastly teachers looked at how to incorporate rich authentic problems into lessons to highlight the connection between mathematics and real life experiences.
This was an enriching professional learning experience that helps our teachers strengthen our mathematics program to ensure it is engaging, challenging, relevant and accessible for all students.
