SIS reflects on Matthew Holm's visit

Babymouse! Squish! Matthew Holm!

Before May 26th, many students at SIS thought Babymouse was fabulous and had no idea why and how she was created. Now, we know so much more about who is behind the stories and drawings that activate our imaginations and keep us wanting to read more!

SIS grades 2 - 5 students and teachers were thrilled to meet Matthew Holm, the famous co-creator of the popular comic series Babymouse and Squish. Matt Holm led 2 presentations, 2 comic illustration workshops, and a mentor session for students independently pursuing comic writing and illustrating.

The excitement around Matt Holm's visit was fabulous and I believe this to be attributed to the fact that our students have truly loved the time they have spent reading Holm's books. The stories are relatable and the graphics catch your eye and engage the mind. The books in the Babymouse comic book series are among the most popular titles in our SIS Elementary Library.

During Matthew's visit, the students were able to learn about the creative process and how graphic novelists do their work. The students were definitely able to make a connection to their own lives as they are learning to be effective creators, communicators and collaborators. The fourth grade students not only attended a presentation by Matt but also a comic illustration session. Thank you to our art teacher, Brittany McCrae for her instruction leading up to this experience to further enhance the experience of learning from a mentor.

Matt Holm has left a lasting impression on our students and further engaged our students in their lives as readers. The visit had an enormous impact on our students and their sense of community as they were able to celebrate a common reading interest. We were also reminded to never underestimate the power of creativity, collaboration, story telling and a sharpie marker.

Thanks to Matt Holm for being part of our SIS community. The SIS Library will soon be promoting Matt and Jennifer Holm's graphic novel: Sunny Side Up as well as Comic Squad. And of course, we will be continuing to carefully follow the adventures of Squish and Babymouse.
