Hats on Heads for the Refugee Children of Syria - A Service Learning Project.
Posted 11/20/2014 11:41AM

Service to others and the learning that goes with it is something that Shekou International School takes seriously. Yet students in middle school's 6Wind Advisory group are still able to approach their self chosen projects with joy and enthusiasm. At year's start, students are assigned to groups no bigger than ten, to advisors who will be one of their subject or specialist teachers. Through a range of bonding activities, students and teachers become a close community of learners. Then with the support of teacher leaders, they all engage in a group service project as well as their own service projects.

Advisory groups are named after natural elements - earth, wind, fire, metal and water. 6Wind changed their name to reflect their high levels of energy, taking the idea of wind and relating it to tornadoes. Hence the name "Funky Twisters"! What's surprising about this group is that they have taken on their Advisor's own gentle service project, called "Hats on Heads for the refugee children of Syria." Encouraged by the wife of the head of UNICEF in Jordan, Funky Twisters are learning to knit hats. Two out of the ten have pledged to knit five hats each, with their first efforts in the making. Two more are also ready to start.

Service Learning at SIS is about students giving to any part of their communities; within school, home, city, country and beyond borders. There is no fundraising involved. Instead, students learn skills, set goals, spend time and find joy in giving to others. SIS students are truly learning to be active members of this school's caring community. At the same time, they are being provided with opportunities that allow them to develop individually. The intention is to have them leave this school with a complete understanding of what it feels like to give to others through their own efforts. In short, they are expected to leave with well developed global citizenship skills.
