Transitioning Students - Time to Plan Goodbyes
Posted 05/28/2014 09:38AM

This time of year can be bittersweet for many of our students here at Bayside. For some, it‘’s time to move on and start a new chapter in their lives in a different school, different country and different culture. Those students who are leaving have been using our Small Learning Community Day during advisory to meet together to discuss the roller coaster of emotions this can be. Students are sharing their thoughts, hopes and anxieties, and through a range of activities (even including a snowball fight) begin to process and plan for success.

One tool that is particularly useful and was developed by Pollock with his research on Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is building a RAFT. All our departing students have begun work on their own personal RAFTs which helps with the transition process.

RAFT stands for:
Reconciliation - taking the time to resolve any conflicts before leaving.
Affirmation - Saying thank you to those people who have been important to you.
Farewells - planning all those farewells - not just to other people but places and rituals e.g, that final trip to the nail salon, final bubble tea.
Think Destination - planning for what it’s going to be like in your new place of residence.

Taking the time to think this process through and ensuring there’s enough time to take care of all the relationships that have been meaningful during time here in China helps greatly with the transition. This is a great activity for anyone of any age, so remember to take that time and build a RAFT.
