Exploring "The Cold War"
Posted 05/14/2014 11:30AM

Bayside’s 8th grade students recently transformed the school’s library into a Cold War Museum.  This was the culminating project for the 8th graders, who had been working on the historical, political, and geographical contexts of the The Cold War and its affect on the the 2nd half of the 20th Century.

The projects ranged from “The Origins of the Cold War” to “The Fall of the Berlin Wall.”  Students also created installations for the numerous proxy wars (Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan), the Space Race, Nuclear Arms Race, as well as several other important issues from Cold War history.

One of the highlights of the event was inviting the entire 5th grade class from Parkside to visit, alongside parents, staff, and students from the high school.  The 5th graders were able to see what middle school is like, to learn about these topics from their 8th grade mentors, as well as be an excellent audience and energetic group of learners within the museum.  Thanks to the 5th grade teachers, their students were also able to use their iPads to offer immediate feedback for our presenters, using Padlet.

This museum project provided the students an authentic audience and performance for their learning, but most of all, it helped launch 8th grade into a holistic understanding of Cold War issues.  Subsequently, they have gone on to read and critically analyze “Animal Farm”, created connections to the current crisis in the Ukraine, and explored the basic premise of Thomas Pikkety’s modern theories on economics, all with their solid understanding of The Cold War.
