ACAMUN Jr. Model United Nations Conference @ Bayside
Posted 04/30/2014 12:04PM

Last weekend, April 26-27, a group of 130 delegates, grades 6-9, from seven schools participated in a Jr. Model of United Nations simulation hosted by SIS.

Our Opening Ceremony, featured keynote speaker, Jane Lee, who serves as Deputy Secretary General for Online MUN or OMUN. Delegates were urged to sign up with OMUN so they may participate in MUN debates in real time with delegates from all over the world right from the comfort of their device.

The main goals of the United Nations, headquartered in New York City, are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achievement of world peace. It was exactly these types of complex issues that our 26 young SIS delegates discussed and debated over the course of the weekend. Representing Iran, USA, Cambodia, Japan, Afghanistan and Germany, they grappled with topics including;

  • Ensuring the protection of the rights of the child in areas of conflict zones
  • Increasing women's role in disarmament and nonproliferation
  • Effective measures against government corruption

Prior to the conference, our twenty-six 6th-9th graders worked for many hours researching their countries and major world issues, writing resolutions and practicing parliamentary debate procedures. Our high school MUN student leadership team, under the leadership of our Esteemed Secretary General, Helena Kao, served as chairs of each committee and worked painstakingly with our middle school students each week helping them research their topics, write position papers and resolutions and practice debate skills.

A huge THANK YOU to Ms. Andrea Jarr whose MUNchkin Press Team documented the entire weekend. Thank you also to our MUN admin team, SIS students, teachers, volunteers, administrators, and support staff who worked tirelessly to make this an amazing event!
