Grade One is Exploring Where We Live!
Posted 04/23/2014 07:22AM

In grade one, the focus in social studies right now is exploring where we live. Last week, the students went on a field trip to Shihai Park, and this week we are taking a field trip to Guang Ming Farm. These opportunities help the students discover places in our community that meet our needs and wants, as well as make our community a nice place to live. While on the field trip, the students explore the area by going on a scavenger hunt and taking pictures of the things that they find with their iPads.

In our classrooms, we have discussed the importance of wants and needs. The students recently completed a project in which they drew a habitat of their choosing and then chose three things that they would need in that habitat, as well as one thing they would want.

This week, the students will begin learning about maps and how to read maps. We will make maps of our classrooms and the students will make maps of their bedrooms at home!

In the coming weeks, we have three more field trips planned to help us explore our community. We plan to go to Park and Shop, local markets, and the ChiWan Temple.
