Edublog's Student Blogging Challenge
Posted 04/15/2014 01:34PM

Throughout the year, grade 4 and 5 students have been using their blogs to document and share their learning at SIS. One aspect (and challenge) of having a blog is sharing your work with others in an effort to get feedback and make connections.

In 2008, an Australian teacher came up with the Student Blogging Challenge as a way for students and classes to “blog and develop a world wide audience while doing so, rather than just having their teacher and classmates look at their work.”

The challenge is now run twice a year and involves hundreds of students from around the world. It provides a framework and network for blog development and interaction which is why grades 4 and 5 decided to get involved with the blogging challenge this spring.

Each week, for ten weeks, a variety of tasks are posted related to a particular topic regarding blogging and the types of challenges are about writing blog post, visual posts, commenting and blog appearance. During the first half of this spring’s challenge, the topics have included:

About Me
It’s a Small World
Digital Footprints
Using Media in Posts

A main focus of the blogging challenge is providing a platform for students and classes to interact with others around the world. Students are encouraged to visit each other’s blogs to learn more about their interests and learning and to leave quality comments. Our grade 4 and 5 students have seen an increase in visitors to their blogs and the number of comments on their posts.

Through blogging challenges students are developing and demonstrating their skills in reading and writing and critical thinking. The blogging tasks also provide opportunities for students to show how they are communicators, independent learners, collaborators, complex thinkers and global citizens in a variety of ways. Student blogging also addresses Shekou International School’s belief that ‘technology is a conduit through which students learn, create, collaborate and share”.
