March is the official month for celebrating the French language all around the world every year. Events like concerts, exhibitions, festivals, drama plays, take place in French-speaking countries that are members of the World Organization of Francophonie, and also in cities hosting French communities.
My Grade 3, 4, and 5 students have studied the history of French language, how it has spread to the rest of the world through colonization, the countries that compose the French-speaking world. They have participated in a writing contest and produced art works about 10 French words chosen every year by the French Ministry of Culture for their strangeness and sounds (the sounding reflecting the meaning).
On Wednesday, March 19th, 2014, the French program parents prepared food specialties from French-speaking countries: Senegal/Martinique/Belgian/Moroccan desserts and sweets…The buffet took place during the last period of the day and was a great demonstration of how to combine the flavor of food and the flavor of words!
