SIS invited Dr. Helena Curtain to hold a workshop for foreign language teachers on March 27 & 28, Chinese teachers from both China and HongKong attended. Dr. Curtain is a very experienced teacher of language and trainer of other language teachers. She is the co-author of Languages and Learners: Making the Match, which is the premier book used in university methodology courses to train language teachers. Her experience ranges from elementary schools all the way up to universities, and she has worked in, or served, many schools all over the world.
Chinese teachers from SIS attended Dr. Curtain's workshop in an effort to improve their own teaching, as well as the SIS Chinese program overall. Teachers who attended the workshop learned about setting overarching targets for Chinese language proficiency and writing learning targets as "Can-Do" statements. Attending teachers also learned about planning lessons that include what learners can do with the things they learn by the end of the lesson, how learners will show what they can do with what they've learned, and what activities will prepare learners to show what they can do with what they've learned.
Regarding the workshop, an attending teacher said it gave them effective teaching activities and strategies. Another teacher said they learned more about curriculum design. One teacher also said what they learned will be very helpful to them for curriculum mapping next school year.
We are all glad Dr. Curtain came to share her expertise with us, and hope to see the Chinese program of SIS continue to improve as a result. We are also thankful to those SIS teachers who gave time out of their Spring Break to attend.
