Mystery Book Clubs

Have you ever felt the suspense, adventure, or thrill of reading a mystery? Have you ever felt like a sleuth finding clues and evidence to solve a puzzle?

During Reader’s Workshop, grade three students turned into detectives by reading mystery books and trying to solve various cases. Jigsaw Jones, Cam Jansen, Nancy Drew and The Box Car Children were some of the most popular series that third graders read. Books within a series have repeating main characters and secondary characters so it was easy for learners to identify the same characters while having their conversations.

Students maintained their own case files where they were able to record the clues they found while reading their mystery book. In their files, they also made predictions on what might happen next. In addition, they had a “Suspect List” to include suspects and the reason why that particular character was suspicious. If they found a new clue or reason why the suspect wasn’t part of that list anymore, students would just check him out of the list.

To make sure they understood the new vocabulary, students had a detective dictionary in their file including words such as alibi, red herring, evidence, witness, culprit and many more.

After reading their chapters, students came prepared for their conversations held in small groups of three or four children. While being in their Mystery Book Clubs, grade three detectives listened and had conversations about the different books they read, comparing and contrasting settings, themes and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters. They came prepared to conversations, bringing sticky notes, file cases, and reading notebooks ready to share about how to solve a mystery.

After reading their second mystery they will write a book review and make an aura in the app Aurasma. Stay tuned!
