EAL Parent Coffee Morning
Posted 02/19/2014 09:55AM
Last Tuesday morning the Elementary School EAL (English as an Additional Language) support teachers hosted a coffee morning for parents to learn about EAL support at SIS.
The team explained the ‘sheltered immersion model’ in place at SIS. This enables students to remain with their peers within their regular classroom, yet receive extra assistance and support as they develop their English language skills. Information was also given about the assessment process that EAL teachers use to assess language development as well as to plan the support given to students.
Parents learned how they could support their children at home as they develop skills in English, and there was time for parents to ask questions. The importance of a strong first language and its impact on the development of additional languages was also emphasised. At the end of the coffee morning parents had the opportunity to explore some of the iPad apps that are used with students.
