Bayside high school English department now offers a wide range of English courses.
Previous to this year, high school humanities classes did not have separate English and social studies courses. With careful consideration, humanities classes were divided, and now Bayside offers a wide range of high school English courses. Currently, Mrs. Cho-Young teaches grade 10 forensics, as well as IB English A I and II, Mrs. Dowty teaches English 9 and 10, and Mrs. Krouse teaches grade 9 writing for academic purposes, as well as IB English B I and II. The variety of English courses offers students opportunities to acquire sophisticated English skills, as well as excel in the four domains of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Mrs. Cho-Young, Mrs. Dowty and Mrs. Krouse have created departmental goals, share resources and observe classes. They also are in the process of implementing writer’s workshop within all their classes.
Mrs. Cho-Young’s grade 12 English A students have studied media with a focus on advertising techniques. They have researched commercials and created presentations in which they analyzed a variety of advertising strategies. Mrs. Dowty’s grade 10 students created individual graphic novels based on their study of the graphic novel Maus II. IB English B students studied third culture kids and produced a video featuring SIS third culture kids, as well as Bayside faculty who were third culture kids.
Mrs. Cho-Young, Mrs. Dowty and Mrs. Krouse are eager to continue developing the high school English curriculum. In addition, they look forward to following and celebrating the achievements of their students as they progress through their high school English courses.
