On April 4th through 8th, 9 of our SIS MS Choir members traveled to International School of Bangkok in Thailand to participate in the AMIS Middle School Honor Boys' and Girls' Choir Festival. To participate in the festival, they were required to demonstrate they possessed the attitude and skills required to learn 8 new pieces of music and were able to sing their parts with confidence. The students practiced many hours in February and March at home and in school learning the pieces, and when we arrived at ISB, they joined students from 16 other international schools to form 2 choirs with a total of 210 members.
AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) is an international, non-profit organization founded almost 40 years ago by music teachers at the American School of London, and has grown to sponsor 16 honor music festivals for MS and HS choirs, band, and strings, in addition to music educator professional development conferences at international schools all over the world. More information about AMIS can be found here: https://www.amis-online.org/
The Festival was an outstanding experience for our SIS choir. On Thursday and Friday, they arrived at ISB around 7:30 and rehearsed 6-7 hours each day. On Friday afternoon, they participated in traditional cultural activities where they learned how to play traditional Thai instruments, learned Thai Dances, and also traditional folding of lotus flowers. Along the way, they made new friends and learned more about working with others to reach a common goal.
Saturday was another day of practice and dress rehearsals, and that evening they performed in the 2018 AMIS Asian MS Honor Boy's and Girls' Choir Concert. The concert was exceptional and SIS was well represented by these very polite, hard-working, and dedicated students.
