The Grade 10 students had an educational and rewarding trip to Lijiang and Shaxi in Yunnan Province. They spent their week in wide variety of physical activities, community service, and cultural exploration.
After a day of travel and exploring Lijiang City, we headed to Shaxi to spend the night. The next morning, we picked up some bikes and practiced some basic bike riding skills before heading out along the river and up into the farms and houses and back down to town. They got to see how the local people farm rice, chili, and tobacco and learn some history. The next day was designing, painting, and decorating play area walls at a local kindergarten using seasonal themes as well as planning and teaching lessons about holidays. The students were genuinely thoughtful and creative and made many new friends that day. In the evening, we visited Shaxi old city to hear a live traditional Chinese music concert. The next day, after a hike up a mountain where they learned about Shaxi's 1000-year-old carved grottoes, they toured a temple and learned some traditional dances. The students were exposed to life in rural China by spending the night in a traditional courtyard style home.
Throughout the trip, the Dragonfly program provided themes including setting goals, showing appreciation to others, and mindfulness, and our Grade 10 SIS students demonstrated these attributes and more. Thank you to the parents for sharing your outstanding sons and daughters with us this week.
