Ten groups from our ES team competed for the best Halloween costume this year. Grade 1 was voted the winner and the Specialist team was the runner up. Congratulations!

Last Friday SIS students and staff dressed up in fancy costumes for the Halloween celebration. ECC kids went on a parade while ES students had fun at Spooky Stations set up all around the campus.

On Monday, Nov. 7th, we are excited to have 2 guest choral clinicians from the USA coming to SIS to work with our students. They are Roger Emerson and John Jacobson, and are very well known for their choral music compositions and their work with teachers.

We are pleased to announce that our global search for a new Elementary Principal for next year has been successfully concluded. Harish Kanabar has accepted the opportunity to lead our elementary division beginning next fall.

Last week our High School Volleyball team got 1st and 2nd place in the ACAMIS tournament in Tianjin. Well done to both girls and boys teams, their coaches and the fantastic support they received from parents during the season.

With typhoon Haima approaching the coast near us, SIS will be closed tomorrow, Friday, October 21, to ensure the safety of our students and staff. No classes will be held. The location and impact of storms is difficult to predict, so we encourage all to please take care and stay safe.

We had a great turn out for the Movie Night last Saturday. Both kids and parents enjoyed the amazing movie and the delicious food. Thank you PSA for organizing this wonderful event!

This is the time of year when most of the SIS Seniors complete and submit their applications to university. Next Friday, SIS will be visited by University of Southern California.

We are now in our second year of MAP testing and have just completed the first round of testing for this year. We have also just shared the results from last year and this year, with parents of students in grades 3-9.

Before the break, our PreK-1 & 2 students enjoyed a bit of water fun. The ECC playground was transformed into a mini water park for tots. Even our teachers enjoyed splashing with the kids.

Kasey Perry, a literacy consultant based in the United States visited SIS during September to work with the Elementary school teachers. Both teachers and parents learned a great deal during the visit.

Empowered by asking why, the high level physics class of 2016 received an average score of 6.5 far exceeding the world-wide average of 4.60.

David M. Schwartz, who has written almost 50 different books which often connect math and science with literature and daily life, inspired Shekou International School Students during his recent visit.

We are excited to offer two new STEAM courses in grades nine and ten this year at the SIS Bayside campus. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

84% of Shekou International School Students scored a six or a perfect score of seven in the International Baccalaureate Mandarin program last year.

SIS high school students started and participate in a TASSEL chapter which provides English education to children in Cambodia over a video-calling service. They are hoping to continue to grow and spread TASSEL's message throughout the school.

Assemblies are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students' success as learners and global citizens at SIS. This year's first ES assembly was led by our Grade 5 students highlighting and celebrating our students as Complex Thinkers.

The Chinese department celebrated the Moon Festival with four different activities this year to help students make better connections with the spirit of the mid-Autumn Festival.

This past summer, two SIS teachers went to the reading and writing institutes at Columbia University and had the chance to bring back new and exciting ideas and methods to add to our teaching repertoire at SIS.

Sixteen service-oriented fourth and fifth graders competed for five positions in our elementary STUCO Executive Council this year. Congratulations to the candidates who were elected!

Grade 11 student Lisa Peng took a creative writing course in Oxford University in England from a published author. Over the two week course she submitted a short story and a poem and sharpened her writing skills.

On Tuesday of last week, Bayside held a Parent Coffee Talk surrounding the use of Edmodo for students in the middle and high school. Following the great turnout, teachers immediately noticed an increase in the number of parents connected to their class.

Three Shekou International School Students undertook the High Level (HL) IB art program and all three received perfect scores of seven. The world average for IB art is 4.78 and Shekou International School's average was seven.

Spending a summer at Columbia University in New York has helped Coco Lau, grade 11, shape her future. After taking a three week course in marketing called Communicating with Consumers - Introduction to Marketing and Advertising, Coco has set her sights on a career in Marketing.

The graduating class of 2016 has been the most successful cohort of the past five years. The results trumpet a string of exemplary results: the highest Diploma point pass of 40 out of a possible 45 for an SIS student; the highest ever SIS average cohort Diploma pass rate of 86.4%, 7.4% above the world average; the highest ever SIS average point score per subject of 5.25 compared to the world average of 4.6; the highest ever SIS average Diploma point score of 33 compared to a world average of 30.

Avivi attended Stanford's summer school program and was excited to take Applied Visual Arts and Design. As her final project, Avivi designed an ice cube that goes into a water bottle and then takes the temperature of the water. She also designed an app to accompany the ice cube.
