6th Graders Create Respiratory Systems

6th grade students have been working hard to design and construct 3D interactive representations of the human respiratory system in science. This is part of a larger study of the human body systems.

Students engaged in the creative design process to construct a variety of unique models made from all sorts of materials like; Lego, food, cardboard, clay and recycled materials. Some were even constructed virtually using Minecraft or other building apps. Others functioned like the real respiratory system with working parts. Some of the models were interactive in other ways, but all were built with the aim of helping others to learn about the structures and functions of the respiratory system. Engaging in this process provided students with an authentic and unique way to showcase their understanding and communicate their thinking.

A practice of both science and engineering is to design, construct and use models as tools for representing abstract phenomenon, ideas and explanations about the world around us. In 6th grade, we have been focusing our learning on how scientists use these models to represent a system (or parts of a system) to aid in the development of questions and explanations, to generate data that can be used to make predictions, and to communicate ideas to others. Students had the opportunity to present their models to teachers and students at the Bayside campus in a mini showcase where they took their viewers on a "tour of the respiratory system."

Every year I am impressed by the creativity, innovation and quality of models produced by our 6th grade students. Seeing students passionate and engaged in science is one of my core values as a teacher. I love providing them with an opportunity to explore their creative side as well as learn scientific principles throughout the process.
