“SIS Model UN team poses after a job well done at THIMUN Singapore"
Last week (November 18-22) SIS sent a team of 14 students to Singapore, where they participated in the THIMUN Singapore Model United Nations conference. The 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students represented the Czech Republic and Brunei Darussalam in committees which discussed issues from nuclear disarmament to LEDC debt relief to protecting cultural heritage during wars. Student delegates from SIS spoke to packed houses to defend their resolutions, added amendments to others, and asked the tough questions when necessary. For many of the students it was their first time at a major international conference and the experience they gained will be invaluable in preparing them for success at future conferences.
Two SIS delegates, Helena Kao and Lecy Campbell, were chosen to defend Serbia as Advocates in the International Court of Justice simulation. Being selected was a great honor for our students, and they surpassed all expectations in arguing a case that was really stacked against them. Many observers commented to us that they were surprised the advocates were able to mount such a great defense considering the constraints the simulation placed upon them. Great work, advocates!
The SIS Model UN team next turns its attention to preparation for BEIMUN, a Model UN conference held in Beijing in March. We look forward to more success and great experiences for our SIS MUNers!
