Parents Learn there are Multiple Ways to Add
Posted 10/24/2017 03:11PM

Let's face it, education has changed since most of our parents were in school. Children no longer sit in rows and memorize everything that the teacher says. Students at SIS are taught the foundation necessary to be complex thinkers and independent learners. Using a workshop model, students engage in a mini lesson and then practice what they have learned through independent and group activities. Tuesday morning, our grades 2 and 3 parents had an opportunity to experience a math mini lesson so that they could understand how math is taught at SIS. Placed in groups, parents worked together to solve math problems and then they presented their answers. Guess what? It turns out that our parents think differently and apply different strategies to arrive at the same answer, just like our students. The workshop model focuses on how a student arrives at an answer to ensure that students understand the greater concepts. Often, teachers will encourage students to deconstruct a problem to help them clarify their thinking. For example, a simple addition problem was presented. Turns out, some people add large sums and then subtract, others use traditional methods of adding and some even used toes and fingers. No matter what the answer, it is the complex thinking and understanding of math principles that matters.

Throughout the school year, our curriculum team hosts workshops designed to show parents how lessons are taught at SIS and even engage in some lessons too. Our next parent workshop is November 1 and is for grade 4 & 5 parents to understand math. November 2, kindergarten and grade 1 parents are invited to learn about math. Literacy sessions are scheduled for later in the month. Be sure to check the calendar listings in the Weekly for updates.
