Bayside Prepares for Week Without Walls
Posted 10/18/2017 03:23PM
It's almost time for our annual Week Without Walls trips for our students here at Bayside. Next week, all students in grades 6-11 will travel to various locations in China (grades 7-10), Hong Kong (grade 6) and Kota Kinabalu (grade 11) for a week of activities that will enable our students to take safe risks, take them out of their comfort zone and grow socially and emotionally.
Preparation for the trips has been happening for many weeks. Advisors, trip leaders and our Activities and Athletics Director have been working closely with our trip provider Dragonfly to ensure our students have the best experiences possible. We hosted a parent information session on Friday, 13 October in partnership with Dragonfly where trip leaders presented an overview of each trip. Dragonfly gave information about health and safety and parents had the opportunity to ask questions and get to know more about what each grade level trip entails.
Students and their advisors have spent advisory sessions discussing the trip and many have researched the area they are traveling to including the cultural aspects or service learning opportunities that they will take part in during the trip. An important part of the preparation has also been discussing the packing lists, organizing rooming and preparing for a trip away from home where setting realistic expectations and goal setting are essential for maximizing success on the trip.
Our Week Without Walls (WWW) trips enable us to make ties with academics. Every group does some service learning and every group takes part in some adventure activities. This holistic experience allows students the chance to experience a different perspective alongside their peers. Our WWW trips focus on our ESLRs which provides unique learning opportunities where students can learn to take risks in a safe environment.
I look forward to learning more about the students fantastic experiences on the trips as they use advisory sessions after WWW to reflect on their risk taking and growth. This is truly a great opportunity for each and every one of our students here at Bayside.
