Middle School Votes for STUCO
Posted 09/14/2017 09:18AM

Another year of middle STUCO is soon upon us. This past Friday, three candidates gave inspirational and informative speeches regarding leadership and their qualifications for holding the office of president for middle school STUCO. Ricco Xie, Manika Bansal, and Seojin Park bravely spoke in front of their peers. After the speeches were completed, the middle school voted Seojin Park as the president and Manika Bansal was voted as vice president. Manika and Seojin reflected on how they felt regarding the election.

When my name was called, I just knew that the most thrilling experience of my life was just about to begin. Speaking in front of more than 150 people was a challenge for me as a student, and as a presenter. The moment I went up to the stage, I was clueless of what to do, and I couldn't process anything through my mind. My speech began with just a quiet "good afternoon," but as time went by, my voice grew louder, because of the comforting atmosphere of the audience. Even when I stumbled over some words, the audience would just smile at me; which I believe helped me gain confidence. I would never forget the applause that the audience gave me when my speech was completed. I believe I was fortunate to join STUCO as an advisory representative last year, because I believe it eventually gave me the opportunity to serve MS as STUCO president for the 2017-18 school year.

-Seojin Park

I wanted to do something more than my daily homework. I wanted to do something that could change this school. That is when everything started. Last year, I joined STUCO in hopes of helping my advisory. This year, I wanted to do more. I wanted to tend to the students' needs and concerns. I wanted to be a voice for all students. I ran so that I could be the person that the school trusts and can be comfortable around.

At first, I was torn. I couldn't decide if I wanted to run or not. I told my parents about my dilemma, hoping they could offer some advice. They said that it didn't matter if I won or lost, it didn't matter if no one believed in me; what did matter is if I really wanted to help the school, if I believed that I could win and change this school for the better. So now I am here writing this as the MS STUCO vice president, ready to be the person who is approachable, willing to help, and always ready for action.

-Manika Bansal

This coming year will see many successful events organized by MS STUCO. In the past, STUCO has organized dances, events to encourage inclusion, and a campaign to complement peers. Please watch this space for news of exciting events coming up.
