National Merit Special Scholarship Awarded to SIS Senior
Posted 05/25/2017 08:10AM
The third of four siblings and the self-described disciplinarian of the family, senior Jonathan Sung is the recipient of a National Merit Special scholarship. Every year around 1,200 National Merit Program participants are presented Special Scholarships provided by corporations and businesses. Jonathan's scholarship was awarded by Wrigley, where his father works.

As Jonathan heads off to UCLA in the fall he reflected on his time at SIS. "SIS has a different atmosphere from the other schools I attended. Because it is a a smaller community, I was able to become close with the other students in my grade and I was able to take advantage of leadership opportunities." Jonathan played a key role in the annual SIS fashion show and was involved in GIN and TASSEL, an organization that teaches English via the internet to children in Cambodia. He was also the head of the prom committee last year and participated in the student council in his junior year.

A native of the Windy City, Chicago, Jonathan has been in international schools for much of his school life. "I miss living in the US but I am really happy that I attended SIS for high school. I would never have experienced trips like Week Without Walls at home." He believes that the students motivate each other to do well and because of the size of SIS, students become very close and help each other to achieve their best.

While Jonathan plans to join the College of Letters and Science and major in business economics and minor in public affairs, art has always been something that he enjoys. In fact Jonathan undertook IB Art and participated in the IB Art show. "Our art program is very strong and the show really celebrated the program," offered Jonathan. In addition to art, English and economics were his favorite subjects. "I enjoyed economics and seeing how it applies to the real world but I also really liked participating in the discussions in IB English."

Jonathan feels prepared to enter college life and we all wish him the very best as he transitions to sunny California.
