Climate Change Presentations in 6th Grade
Posted 02/09/2017 08:19AM

During the latter half of Semester One, 6th grade students researched and prepared a presentation on Climate Change in Humanities. Working in teams, students were tasked with determining the impact that humans have had on the environment and prepared a presentation based on evidence from their research. This topic allowed for significant and important source analysis consideration and really stretched 6th grade students to think geographically, ethically, economically, socially and critically before they put together their presentation.

Finally, students were challenged by the opportunity to personalise their presentation to the audience of their choice. Three groups decided that their message was best suited for members of the SIS school administration and presented to Dr. Cox, Ms. Sung, Mr. Livingston, Ms. Carrillo, Ms. Hamley, Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Brooker with suggestions such as 'Meatless Mondays' and 'increasing the plants per classroom'. Other groups chose to tailor their message to MS STUCO and focus on recycling; or to focus on eco-jobs and present to HS Seniors.

On Thursday, 19 January, 26 grade 6 students travelled to the Parkside Campus at Jingshan to present their message to 4th or 5th grade students. 6th graders enjoyed not only the opportunity to visit their elementary school but to also show their old teachers and friends how they have developed as presenters. They took great pride in their ability to teach younger students about such an important issue. The experience seemed mutually beneficial as the younger students excitedly asked challenging questions about this global problem.
