The Magic Happens Outside of Your Comfort Zone - Grade 6 Week Without Walls
Posted 11/09/2016 02:51PM
This past week, 48 6th graders and 6 teachers embarked on a journey in self-discovery, collaboration and community on Lantau island. It's a big deal for 11 and 12 year-olds to muster the inner strength to leave their comfortable beds, homes, families and plugged-in lives to embark on a week of 'camp life'; and these 6th graders handled it amazingly. Our catch phrase for the week was "the magic happens outside of your comfort zone", and for many students, they truly got to to feel this magic as they persevered physically and emotionally through the many exciting challenges of the week. The week had many highlights including sea kayaking, hiking, nature-piling and canyoning. But many of the biggest achievements for the students as individuals came from the small moments: trying new food, being responsible for their own sunscreen and hygiene, building and sleeping in a tent, story-telling as a team, preparing and cooking meals, building a fire with only a flint, reading a map and compass, working in partnerships or teams to achieve a task.
The smiles told the story of a great week — for teachers and students alike.
