All IB Art Students Receive Perfect Scores

Three Shekou International School Students undertook the High Level (HL) IB art program and all three received perfect scores of seven. The world average for IB art is 4.78 and Shekou International School's average was seven. Ms. Maria Yung, now beginning her 14th year of teaching and her sixth year at SIS as an IB art teacher, attributes the success to hands-on mentoring, emphasis on writing and computer skills that are a staple of the curriculum at SIS.


Ms. Yung explained, "I have seen the requirements for the IB art program change several times over my six years as an IB art teacher. While technical know-how is still important, computer fluency, artist research and excellent writing skills are vital as well. Students now submit a digital portfolio of their work using either keynote or powerpoint. The presentation and written explanations are then assessed and graded by the IB organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Students must be able to present and explain their work fluidly."


"Last year we had three high level IB art candidates and each had a different strength, but because the IB organization looks at different disciplines, all our students (Molly Brooker, Ellen Soderberg and Hajira Kamran) did exceptionally well. At SIS we emphasize critical thinking, and those skills helped students document their learning journey in a digital portfolio. In fact, Ellen is now studying art at the University of the Arts in London while Molly and Hajira are pursuing majors outside of art."


The IB art program has three components. The first is comparative study which focuses on art history and analysis. Students analyze and critique artwork demonstrating their knowledge of art vocabulary. High level students must incorporate the art research into an original piece. "This segment makes up 20% of the student's grade and is assessed by the IB organization," explained Ms. Yung. The second area is a process portfolio or a digital sketchbook. Students must include 2D (painting & drawings), 3D (sculpture and textiles) and time-based media which is video, photography or computer based graphic design. This segment shows the students' development and process which is also submitted in a keynote or powerpoint presentation and represents 40% of the student's grade. The third segment is the exhibition which is a collection of works which as a common theme or style among the pieces. High level students must submit 8 pieces. This area also makes up 40% of the student's grade and this is the only segment where the teacher may recommend a score to the IB organization.


Secondary school principal, Mike Livingston, explains the success of the IB art program this way, "At SIS we have small class sizes which allows us to personalize the learning and we have highly qualified, experienced teachers. Mrs. Yung worked individually with each student and has a very hands-on approach. She was able to guide each student to bring out their best work."
