SIS' The Big DEAL (Drop Everything And Listen) came about as a way to open a space for showcasing student work to a wider audience. By setting aside a common time to just "listen" to, say, student made podcasts, SIS can come together as a community of learners to support, empower and learn from each other.
Most recently, The Big DEAL allowed our grade 8 writers to showcase their 'This I Believe' writing pieces, which they wrote already knowing they would record them on podcasts and publish them on a blog to a wide audience. Not only would their writing voices as well as their physical voices be heard, but they would also open their pieces to receive feedback from readers.
During The Big DEAL, G8 writers received a wide array of comments from teachers, students of all grade levels and fellow writers; such as "I really enjoyed the alternative angle you took to the idea of love. The way you presented the ideas separately and then painted your own idea of true love was an interesting insight to your thoughts." And "Thank you so much for writing this inspirational essay. It is very persuasive, and I absolutely love the way you read it: your tone, your speed, your punctuation... I think it is perfect." This approach went beyond teacher assessment and gave writers the opportunity to be acknowledged rather than just 'graded' for their work.
